Camera Connection and Provisioning

How to Connect, Test, and Add Cameras to the Alocity AiVR System

To begin video recording and analytics, compatible cameras must be connected and provisioned into available AiVR slots. This guide outlines the full process — from discovery to stream activation — and addresses both ONVIF and RTSP integrations.

1. Before You Start

Make sure of the following:

  • Cameras must support ONVIF Profile S or higher, or offer a valid RTSP stream.

  • Streaming codec must be H.264 or H.265 (MJPEG and other formats are not supported).

  • Cameras must be connected to the same local network (LAN) as the AiVR.

  • You must have valid admin credentials for Web Services (HTTP), ONVIF or RTSP access.

Important Note:If you don’t know the credentials, reset the camera or contact the your camera vendor or manufacturer to troubleshoot on how to obtain them.

2. Discovering Cameras on the Network

Once the AiVR is online and connected to the same subnet:

  • Go to the AiVR tab in the Alocity Control Center and click Scan.

  • The AiVR will display a list of all IP cameras it detects on the network.

Each entry will show:

  • IP address

  • RTSP status

  • ONVIF support

  • Manufacturer

  • MAC address

  • Snapshot (if available)

You may now log into the camera directly to configure or validate credentials:

  • Open a web browser and type the camera’s IP address (e.g. http://192.168.1.100)

  • Use web login credentials provided by the camera vendor or manufacturer.
  • Adjust settings, enable RTSP/ONVIF, or update firmware as needed.

Use a VLC player (for RTSP) or ONVIF Device Manager (for ONVIF) to:

  • Validate credentials

  • Test stream stability

  • Adjust angle/zoom of the camera lens before analytics begin

Important Note: Do not assume the camera’s web login credentials work for ONVIF or RTSP. These may require separate user setup. If you don’t know the credentials, reset the camera or contact the your camera vendor or manufacturer to troubleshoot on how to obtain them.

3. Adding a Camera to the AiVR

When you’re ready to provision:

For RTSP Cameras:

  • Click Add next to the detected RTSP camera.

  • Fill in:

    • Name

    • Username / Password

    • Append URL (stream path after IP, e.g., stream0?username=admin&password=abc123)

    • Select a Zone

  • Press Test to confirm connectivity.

If the video loads: the stream is active
If it fails: recheck credentials, URL format and additional camera settings via the camera web services.

Important Note: Alocity does not provide 3rd camera support, please refer to your camera manuals and manufacturer or vendor support service if you encounter further problems in connecting your camera.

For ONVIF Cameras:

  • Click Add next to the ONVIF camera

  • Enter only the Username / Password

  • Click Scan

  • The AiVR will automatically pull the correct RTSP stream from the ONVIF profile, eliminating the need for manual stream path configuration

ONVIF and RTSP Ports

Ensure the following ports are allowed through your firewall:

  • RTSP: Port 554

  • ONVIF: Typically Port 80, 8000, or 8080 depending on the camera

4. Final Provisioning

  • After testing, click Save to assign the camera to a slot

  • Stream may take up to 10 minutes to initialize and begin analytics

  • Once active, you can monitor footage via the Video Wall or AI Search

The AiVR may detect more cameras than it supports. You can only assign the number of cameras allowed by your AiVR hardware license.
